There are certainly a lot of different dog crates out there. Did you notice?

We sure did, and rather than wasting our time and money by choosing something at random or that has the lowest price tag, we did some research.

In our guide below, we’ll be presenting our findings with you so that you can compare and contrast some of the best dog crates on the market.

Choosing a dog crate requires more effort than you may have thought since the small details can either make or break the crate as a whole.

We list out all of the things you need to take into consideration before you choose and we’ll show you some of the top crates that dogs (and owners) are happy with.

Head down and take a look!

Narrow Down the Options

Since there are so many crate styles and options available, narrow down the choices by taking the following factors into considerations:

  • Material. Do you want a metal crate, plastic crate or a fabric crate?
    • Metal is the most common choice for at home use or for larger dogs that need to be kept in a more secure enclosure.

These can tend to be a bit noisier than some of the other crates and some dogs can easily chew through the small metal tubing, so keep this in mind if you’re considering a metal crate.

    • Plastic crates are great for nervous dogs or those who feel more secure in enclosed spaces with solid walls. They travel well and since the walls are solid, it is harder for dogs to get out of (those that tend to try to escape).

Less air passes through plastic crates, which can be a bad thing in the summer or warm temperatures since you don’t want your dog to overheat.

    • Soft crates are perfect for travel (storing and setting up once you’ve arrived at your location is easy). Many use them for smaller dogs at shows, camping or on road trips where you need a comfortable place for your dog to sleep.

The one major down side to these is that they are hard to clean and not safe for the washing machine

  • Number of Doors. Some crates have double doors, which can be very useful if the crate will only fit in a certain space when turned a certain way. With two doors, you can access the dog easily no matter which way it is pointed.
  • Size. Be sure that you get the appropriate size for your dog. If it is too small, your dog will have a hard time maneuvering around inside and sometimes if it is too large, dogs will feel less secure.

Crates that are too large also leave room for your dog to soil, and since they never soil where they sleep, it’s best not to provide them with too much extra space.

  • Divider. Some of you may be in need of a large crate that houses two dogs, but if those two dogs don’t always get along (or they simply need to be separated), a divider comes in mighty handy and helps you avoid the expense of a second crate!

They also allow you to purchase an adult sized crate for a puppy and move the divider as puppy grows so they don’t have too much space.

This crate works quite well for the majority of dog owners.

You can choose from a single door or a double door crate and they offer a wide range of sizes: from as small as 18 inches in length and up to 48 inches in length for larger dogs.

Set up for this crate is quite easy; just take a look at the manufacturer’s video!

Most dog owners use this at night as a secure sleep area for their dog or during the day for dogs that don’t try to demonstrate their best Houdini impression (escape artists). It also comes with a plastic tray and a divider that allows you to adjust the size as needed.

This is definitely an excellent crate, but if you’re looking for something a little more durable, then we definitely recommend that you check out the next one.

Some use this as a cage and some use this as a crate, but for whatever you use it for, this is definitely heavy-duty.

Some dogs can snap through metal crate walls like twigs, but this one is made with thick, 20-guage steel and reinforced with half-inch steel tubing. The seams are also heavily welded at all of the points that receive the highest amount of stress to ensure strength and durability.

Since the flooring is grated, we would recommend a pillow that fits snuggly inside so that it won’t be uncomfortable on your dog’s feet. It comes with a tray drawer that sits underneath and has locking wheels for easy relocation.

This isn’t necessarily for aggressive dogs (although it could be). This is great for dogs that are large and powerful, because even the sweetest oaf can whip out grizzly bear strength once they are locked inside, so if you’re sick of wasting money on cages that they eat through in a week, consider investing in a sturdy one like this right from the get-go.

Our last crate is ideal for those of you with smaller dogs or those of you looking for something that you can use with a variety of small pets in the home.

Since it has both a front door and top load panel, this allows you to use it for dogs, cats, birds or any other small family critter who you need to move from point A to point B.

If you’re looking for something to transport your small dog in, this is definitely a handy little crate. It is easy to assemble, the double door feature is handy and there are plenty of air vents to prevent it from getting too warm inside for your furry friend.
