Helping you find the best dog food for Huskies is a bit of a difficult task since we don’t know the individual needs of your dog. The brands we highlight below are, in general, excellent choices for most Husky owners.

If your dog has more specific dietary needs (allergies, overweight or underweight, picky eater, etc.), we’ve tried to include a few options for everyone so that you can find the right match for your dog. We also include a few useful tips about Huskies that will help you as you shop.

Things to Consider When Buying Dog Food for Huskies

Before selecting a brand, here are a few things to take into consideration:

  • Quality. If you want to have a healthy Husky, you’ll need to get a quality food. Their bodies can perform extremely well on slightly less food than you would give another dog breed of the same size due to the work they were bred for; however, the food that you feed needs to be high quality.
  • Protein and Grains. Huskies have evolved throughout the years, but as we all know, they were originally used in extremely cold climates as work dogs. Cold climate=no vegetation. Their diets were based on mainly protein (vegetation not being available in the cold, snowy regions) and even today, feeding kibble with grains or sometimes even rice can be difficult for their bodies to process.

Opt for a grain-free and food that is higher in protein. If you have a Husky with a sensitive stomach, sweet potatoes or regular potatoes would make better fillers than grains.

  • Limited Ingredient Diets. If you’re trying to pinpoint an allergy or you have a dog with a sensitive stomach, limited ingredient diets are ideal. Check out Canidae and Acana below (numbers 5 and 6, respectively) if you’re looking for this type of food.

The system of the modern day Husky has adapted to tolerate certain foods that didn’t originally make up their diet (rice is used in many dog food brands, for example), so even rice might work. In general, however, it’s best to avoid grains.

Activity Level

Lazy couch potato or energetic working dog? The type of food and quantity of food depends on your dog’s activity level.

  • Less Active Dogs. Keep an eye on the fat percentage in the food you’re interested in. When you look at the guaranteed analysis on the food label, a 10% fat minimum is good for dogs that don’t get much exercise during the day.
  • Active Dogs. Active dogs need a more of everything. More protein, more fat and more food. For very active Huskies, look for a crude protein minimum of 30%, probably higher.

Picky Eaters

“I’d like a bowl of kibble with a teaspoon of yogurt, a half a carrot and just a dusting of cheese on top, please”

(later that day)

“What is this!? Why would you put yogurt, cheese and carrots on my already-tasty dog kibble!? Get it off! Get it off!”

Huskies can be rather picky when it comes to eating and you might need to pull a few treats – or rather tricks – out of your sleeve in order to get them to eat.

Try adding some natural, raw foods on top to see if it will tempt a picky eater:

  • Bits of apple or carrot
  • A dab of yogurt
  • Small quantities of cheese
  • Cooked salmon or other cooked meats

Some also give raw meat to dogs (although you should never give raw fish), but the meat needs to be fresh and of very high quality in order to do this safely. You might even need to change flavors (not brand) of the dog kibble you give in order to keep your Husky from getting bored

If you have a very active Husky, this high-protein formula from Victor is an excellent choice.

It has a whopping 42% of protein, 17% of carbs and 22% crude fat, which will fuel the body of any active, working dog in all the right ways.

We love that it is grain-free, too. They use sweet potato rather than rice or grains, which is easier to digest.

The best dog food for Huskies and pretty much any breed is Orijen. Many don’t buy it because of the price tag (it’s expensive), but they have a quality product!

This is great for dogs with normal activity levels (a decent amount of exercise with a side of lounging on the couch).

You will see the proof of the quality ingredients in your dog: healthy coat, healthy stool, healthy everything! We highly recommend this if you want to keep your Husky in tip-top shape.

Try Blue Buffalo if you have a less active dog. It has a lower percentage of fat (9% minimum) while maintaining a higher level of protein that your Husky needs (30% minimum).

The calorie levels are just right for a dog that spends a lot of time indoors/lounging or overweight Huskies that need to shed a few pounds gradually.

We didn’t find any grains listed, which was another reason we loved it!
