One of the biggest challenges some dog owners face is convincing their dog to eat on a regular basis. Naturally, this causes us to worry.

If it’s been a while since they last ate, many of us usually feel the need to entice them with something tastier: bits of sausage, a little raw or cooked egg mixed in with their dry food or other human table scraps.

While we certainly have good intentions, our food gestures may be sending another signal to pooch: If I don’t eat the dry stuff, they’ll give me something tastier!

On our list below, we’ll take a look at some of the best dog food for picky eaters and help you determine how to approach meal times in a way that will help your dog to understand to love their kibble more than table scraps.

When Did Their Picky Eating Habits Begin?

Some dogs are serial picky eaters: they’ve been that way since they were puppies. Others may have recently started turning their nose up at the dog bowl, which could mean a variety of things.

  • If You’ve Been with the Dog Since Puppyhood. If you’ve had your dog since it was a puppy or young adult and it has always approached eating in a particular way, then chances are that you’ve been through a variety of food brands. If this is normal behavior for your dog and it is obvious that they’re happy and healthy (coat is shiny and they’re energetic), then you may just need another brand switch.

Some of the brands below may do the trick!

  • If You’ve Just Welcomed The Dog To Your Home. Dogs that you’ve rescued or recently adopted could be under quite a bit of stress, which causes them to eat more hesitantly. New environment, new people, new everything may have them feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Avoid human food and table scraps if possible and try moving the food area as you help them adjust. The dog may feel more comfortable eating in your presence or if you hold the bowl while others may not want you there as they eat.

Sometimes just a little change can make a huge difference for the dog.

My Dog Has Just Recently Become Picky About Food

If you’ve noticed that your dog has stopped eating their favorite kibble, then it may be related to a health issue.

For dogs who normally love to eat and then suddenly lose interest, there is probably an underlying issue that you need to discuss with your vet.

TIP: Send the Right Message

Sometimes using a bit of dog psychology can help you turn them back onto their food.

As we mentioned, it’s common for owners to give in and add on some tasty human food to the dog kibble, but this is only sending one message to the dog and it’s the wrong message.

It seems that I have to wait to eat my kibble until owner puts the good stuff on!

Make sure you’re sending them the right messages with your approach to food so that they’ll respond in the right way, too.

TIP: Don’t Give In

It may take a while for you to re-train a picky eater to eat meals on a regular basis (they’re probably used to your tasty scraps).

Put the food down and leave the room or go about your day, then come back after 20-30 minutes. If the food is still there, remove it and wait until the next meal to repeat the process. If they don’t eat that day, then try adding a very small amount of a healthy additive (plain yogurt, cooked squash, etc.) on top to tempt them. Gradually reduce the “toppings” until they’ve gotten into the habit of eating regularly.

Most importantly, use common sense and good judgement. If you feel that something is off and your dog isn’t eating due to health issues, take them to the vet.

TIP: Buy Small Quantities

Since you may have quite a bit of trial and error ahead of you, purchase a small quantity of a mixture of brands and test them to see how your dog reacts.

Sometimes dogs just don’t like the brand of food you’ve chosen. If that’s the case, see if you can return it or exchange it. It not, donate it to the local shelter and try switching brands again.

Forget the cheap, low-quality brands that are packed with fillers and dog-un-friendly ingredients: maintain your quality standard and present your dog with a healthy diet. Unfortunately, most dogs might like the unhealthy kibble since they’re full of starches. Yes, they eat, but it’s not good for them.

Is this best dog food for picky eaters ever? It is for some and not for others. If these don’t work, try the other three on our list!
