Welcoming a furry little ferret into the family is exciting and you’ll need to plan ahead when it comes to feeding them and their living arrangements.

In addition to understanding what you should feed them, it’s important to understand what you shouldn’t you feed them, as well.

In our guide below, we’ll be providing you with a list of the best ferret food choices in pellet form in addition to listing a few other things that you can (or should not) incorporate into their diet.

These little carnivores require a special balance of proteins and nutrients, so we’ll discuss all of this below in order to help you formulate a healthy diet for your ferret.

Ferret-Friendly Foods

Pellets are the most common choice for the domestic ferret, but that doesn’t mean that you should strictly limit their diet to pellets only.

Like cats, they are natural carnivores, which means they require a higher amount of protein in their diet.

Should you feel like giving your ferret a natural snack in between meals, the following are ferret-approved:

  • Cooked Eggs
  • Raw Chicken (fresh)
  • Raw Turkey (fresh)
  • Raw Lamb (fresh)

Kitten food is another common option since it contains a higher amount of protein than adult cat food, but you should never use kitten food as their main food source.

It is to be fed as an occasional snack only and you should never feed adult cat food or any type of dog food to a ferret.

We recommend grain-free kitten food because, as you will see in the next section, ferrets shouldn’t eat grains. Number 4 in our table is a good choice: it is grain-free and high in protein.

What Ferrets Should NOT Eat

While it may be tempting for you to give a ferret the same types of snacks and treats that you would give to a dog or cat, this is exactly what you should not do when it comes to this type of animal.

In order to keep your ferret happy and healthy, avoid the following:

  • Dog Food
  • Adult Cat Food
  • Sugary Snacks
  • Peanut Butter
  • Potato Chips
  • Dairy
  • Fruit and Vegetables
  • Bread and Grains
  • Grapes or Raisins

If you keep any plants in your home, be sure that they are non-toxic, as curious little ferrets will probably end up tasting them at some point.

This is definitely the best ferret food on our list. The manufacturer specializes in ferret food and they are well known for their quality.

Taking a closer look at their ingredients, we saw that the formula has a guaranteed analysis of no less than 38% crude protein, which is great for our furry little carnivorous friends.

This is quite a large bag, so we would recommend it to those of you with a few ferrets unless you are able to divide up the food and vacuum-seal it into smaller bags in order to keep it fresh.

Overall, this is the preferred choice of ferret owners, so give it a try with your ferret to see what he or she thinks!

This is a great alternative for those of you who don’t like (or didn’t have any luck with) Marshall’s food.

It has an even higher percentage of protein than Marshall’s at 40%, so this would probably be appropriate for more active ferrets.

We love that it is corn-free, that is doesn’t contain any artificial preservatives and that there is no fishmeal present (which can cause really foul ferret odors).

This is the 8-pound size (this one) or the [easyazon_link asin=”B000OQSOBC” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”senappblo-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]30-pound size[/easyazon_link] if you have several ferrets.

Again, this is a great alternative to the Marshall brand!

If you’re looking for a treat that is as close to the species’ natural diet as possible, then you should definitely get Ferret Archetype from Wysong.

This contains a whopping 44% protein and is as close to nature as you can get. It is a starch-free formula (which is great since ferrets shouldn’t eat grains) and it’s loaded with real chicken, chicken organs and chicken bone in order to imitate what a ferret would naturally eat and digest in the wild.

Again, this is a snack only and not to be used as a meal since it is high in fat. You can use this to entice a picky ferret to eat or as a reward. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser!
