When you’re training a kitten to use the litter box, every little trick helps.

While most of the standard litters that you would use for adult cats will work equally as well for the novice kitten, there are a few specially scented formulas that are said to help you attract them to “do their business” in the box.

Do these actually work? What should you look for when shopping for litter?

We’ll answer these questions and more here in our guide to the best litter for kittens.

Types of Litter

If this is your first cat or if you’ve never really shopped for new brands of litter until now, here are the main types of litter to choose from:

  • Clay-Based. These formulas are mainly made from clay, which is said to absorb liquids and smells quite well.

You can choose from clumping or non-clumping formulas, but sometimes the dust can be an issue if you purchase a low quality brand.

  • Crystal. This litter is made from silica gel beads, and while they are rather absorbent, curious kittens may be tempted to taste these harmful beads so we wouldn’t recommend this type for them.
  • Natural. These litters are made from a variety of materials: some are made from corn kernels, wheat, walnuts, paper or wood.

If you hate the waste and dust created by standard clay litters, then natural litters are a more eco-friendly and healthy option for everyone (even if they aren’t always as effective as clay).

Litters Designed to Attract Kittens and Cats

Some litter formulas claim to attract kittens to the litter box when nature calls: Dr. Elsey’s, for example.

Dr. Elsey is a feline expert who has learned a thing or two in the 35 years that he has been a feline veterinarian.

Based on his studies and experience, he developed Cat Attract, which is an herbal-based formula that is said to naturally attract kittens and cats to the litter box.

The formula actually does work surprisingly well for many cat owners, so whether you’re trying to train a kitten or an adult cat, the litter is certainly worth a try.

We all know how picky cats can be, however, so you may have to have several brands on hand as your kitten grows and develops his preferences.

Kitty’s Preferences

As your kitten grows and develops, his habits and preferences will grow, as well.

It’s up to you, the owner, to keep a close eye on his litter box habits. If he tracks his liter everywhere after using the box, you may want to get a litter mat to place in front of it.

Some litter may be uncomfortable for your kitten, and if he doesn’t like walking on it then he’s not going to use it.

Be prepared for a little trial and error as you search for the best litter for kittens!

For kittens, young cats or even adult cats who are learning what the litter box is all about, Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract is an excellent product.

This is an “all-natural” formula (although we must admit that we had a hard time finding the actual ingredients list to show you here, but we can tell you that it is clay-based) that is 99% dust free. It is also a clumping formula, which makes it easy to remove waste between uses.

The trick to this formula is a natural herbal scent (again, we’re not sure which herbs) and it really does seem to make a difference for quite a few cat owners who try it.

Can we guarantee it will work for your cat? Of course not. You know how some cats can be so picky!

This is definitely worth a try, though, especially for a kitten who continues to have accidents indoors.

One of the reasons that cat owners love this so much is that you can flush it down the toilet rather than sending it in the garbage can and (subsequently) to some landfill.

Now, they do have specific instructions on how to properly dispose of the used litter if you do decide to flush it. Here are their official words:

Designed to flush in well-maintained systems, only 1-2 clumps at a time.

If your septic tank has problems and you plan on dumping the whole litter box in at once, you’re going to create one very stinky problem.

If you follow protocol, this should be an excellent product for your kitten. It is great at controlling odors, it clumps well and it is 99% dust free.

This is a corn-based litter, so give it a try to see if your kitten likes it!

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B0002AQ0BQ” cloaking=”default” height=”500″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81LX1RU9LGL._SP500_.jpg” tag=”senappblo-20″ width=”250″]

What better way to use yesterday’s newspaper than in your cat’s litter box?

This rather unique litter is unscented, non-clumping and made from recycled paper. It is said to be 3 times more absorbent than clay litter and that it provides excellent odor control.

It’s also much softer than other litters (thanks to the paper) and 99.7% dust free. The best part about this? No tracking! It stays in the litter box and won’t stick to your cat’s paws.

This is a great litter to introduce to young kittens and to train them with if you want them to get used to using natural litter right from the get go.

Not all kittens and cats take to this particular style of litter, but you won’t know until you give it a try!
