Keeping squirrels away from the birdseed isn’t just a battle; it’s war. It is a series of ongoing battles where, occasionally, the squirrel may win, but overall, you’d like to help the birds bring home every victory.

Since you’re out hunting for the best squirrel proof bird feeder, we’re going to guess that the squirrels have been winning up to this point.

That will change very, very soon.

Our list below will highlight some of the most effective feeders that will allow the birds to eat the seed rather than the squirrels, so check them out to see which one will meet your needs and budget!

As You Shop…

Here are a few things to remember as you shop for a feeder:

  • Make Sure It Still Attracts Birds. The whole point of a bird feeder is to attract birds, and some of the designs of squirrel proof feeders don’t seem to appeal to birds as much. If it keeps the squirrels out but doesn’t attract the birds, then you’ll need to exchange it for a better one.
  • See What Others Say. For a product like this, it’s important to find out what other’s experiences are.

Look for helpful and detailed comments of those who have used it previously to help you decide if it’s right for your needs.

Feeder Additions

Number 4 in our table isn’t an actual feeder but a very effective accessory that you can use with your existing feeder to help prevent the squirrels from reaching the seed.

In the photos here, you can see it in action.

It works best with standalone feeders, but some have even placed it on top of hanging feeders to block the squirrels.

Is it 100% effective? No, but it does work well for many. If you don’t want to invest in an entirely new feeder or spring for the [easyazon_link asin=”B0007LQ3RQ” locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”senappblo-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]Brome Squirrel Buster Plus[/easyazon_link], which we’ll discuss in a moment, then this is probably the right choice for you.

Brome has done it. They have won the war against thieving squirrels.

This is not just the best squirrel proof bird feeder out there, it is pure genius hanging from a tree.

When birds sit on the perch, the seed doors are open. They are so lightweight that the feeder doesn’t even detect their presence.

When a squirrel hops onto the feeder, he’ll eventually get down to the perch and rest on it, and that’s when…BOOM!

His weight pulls down the perch and the protective doors in front of the seed. A very simple and extremely effective contraption that doesn’t hurt the squirrels but also doesn’t allow them to eat the seed. It’s actually rather expensive for a bird feeder, but if you’ve been battling the squirrels for long enough and you’ve tried everything else, this is the answer to all of your squirrely problems.

You HAVE to watch this video. It’s humorous, but it also gives you a clear idea of how the feeder works:

If you want to spend a bit less on the weapons you use for the squirrel war, then this feeder from Squirrel Solutions seems to be a great alternative.

What’s more important is that the birds love this feeder (and they do), because it is they who need to eat the seed and feel comfortable doing so in the process!

Most squirrels fail at this feeder and give up, moving along to bigger and better things. Persistent squirrels, however, eventually seem to find a way in.

Because of this, we can’t say that it is entirely as effective as the Brome Squirrel Buster, but it does a decent job for most who try it.

Users appreciate that it is very easy to clean.

This feeder works similarly to the Brome Squirrel Buster with the weight-triggered door closure system.

It costs much less than the Brome and seems to keep out the squirrels that are more easily deterred. Some find that the design and shape isn’t as attractive to the birds, though, and others have found that more determined squirrels eventually find a way in.

The concept is awesome, but we have to admit that Brome designed it better.

If you want to spend less and you live in an area with few squirrels, then this might be a great alternative to the more expensive Brome feeder.
